Notes From the President/June 2017

Huddle up, Quarterbacks! The new football season is just around the corner.

The big news: a new venue. We’ve called an audible on our home field and will be moving our meetings to the University Club of Pasadena. Faced at Brookside with rising costs, the prospect of having to use the smaller (and darker) Arroyo Room for most of our meetings, and increasing complaints about the parking, we found a willing host in the shadow of City Hall. The price is right; we won’t have to raise our meal prices. The room is spacious and bright and there’s an even larger room when needed. I’m confident you will like the food and service, which will feature a mix of buffet and plated meals. The location should be more convenient for most of you, and we are working on providing free valet parking. I think all of you are going to enjoy our new home field.

We also are excited about our emerging lineup of speakers. They represent college, professional and high school football. Although there are still a few “recruits” who have not yet signed their “letters of intent”, we are closing in on a five-star class of speakers. Leading off our season on September 1st is Clay Helton, head coach of the USC Trojans. Up next on September 8th is John Spanos, President of Football Operations for the new LA Chargers, followed on the 15th by Kevin Demoff, President of the LA Rams. Also included from the high school ranks are the Commissioner of the CIF Southern Section on September 22nd and the head coach of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, the most successful high school program in the country over the past four seasons or so, on September 29th. UCLA’s Roman Phifer, a former Bruin player and current Director of Player Development, will join us on October 6th. We will conclude our season on November 17th with our traditional USC/UCLA Rivalry Week program with Coach Harvey Hyde moderating a “panel” consisting of the beat writers for both teams from the LA Times, Zach Helfand for the Trojans and Ben Bolch for the Bruins. This one promises to be a lot of fun!

Stay tuned for further information, but don’t forget to check our meeting schedule to keep up with the latest additions to our lineup of speakers. And mark your calendars now for the twelve successive Fridays beginning September 1st. You may click here to download a 2017 application–it’s never too early to rejoin!

I want to thank Bill Payne, our immediate past president, for his leadership and commitment these past two years, as well as for helping me get my playbook together as the incoming president. I also want to thank the Board of Directors for their continuing commitment to the Pasadena Quarterbacks.

I look forward to seeing all of you Quarterbacks and guests this fall at the University Club of Pasadena.
